I know it’s an old typographer’s gripe to bitch about the misuse of those dagger-like inch & feet symbols rather than the proper “curly” apostrophes and quote marks and although I do still gripe about that passé subject, that is not what I’m up to here.
I was at my local Western Beef supermarket last month and I noticed some signage in which they had a surprising typographic error. Hanging on a wall near the checkout line was a paper banner with their slogan: “We know the neighborhood!“ Although they did have correct sort of curly quotes, they had opened and closed their quotation with the same open quote symbol! I didn’t have my camera with me, but later that same day I saw another example of this odd mistake.
